Maybe the
Candidate could fly or shoot lasers from his or her hands? Ciara wondered. But she would never
know. All she had left was pitch-black vision and a few memories missing from
her head. The Specialists damaged her optic nerve and made her blind so they
could check if she was the Candidate. They also destroyed her memories so she
wouldn’t be able to remember everything.
She wished the Candidate had
never been born. The Specialists hadn’t discovered the Candidate—even if they
were the best ones for the job. They’d done everything, but somehow everyone’s
tests came out normal. Blood tests, urine tests, chest X-rays—you get the
picture. No test had shown signs of abnormalities, strange DNAs, or discoveries
related to the Candidate.
For Ciara, it had been easy.
All she had to do was grope her surroundings, feel the texture of the walls,
and practice dodging the objects blocking her way. But for other blind people,
the physical tests was massive torture.
As the new day began, the last
thing Ciara wanted was break out of the tower they kept her in. Though it
wouldn’t be easy, yet somehow, it will never be. The tower was heavily guarded
by Rein Guards, who were soldiers sent from the Empress. The Specialists said
other things too. That whoever discovers the Candidate will be rewarded by the
Empress. And then, the Candidate will be executed.
Ciara couldn’t forget how
scared she was when she was brought into her first cell. She’d been twelve at
that time, squeezing her ears to muffle the deafening sounds of fissile bombs
exploding outside the tower. It was a time where war continued to grow. They
called it the Atomic Warfare.
She told herself to be brave.
To be strong. So by the time the war stopped, Ciara could hardly cry. She had
forgotten how many times she'd accidentally bumped her forehead on the wall,
tripped when the ground turned elevated, or dropped her plate when the Rein
Guard handed her food.
Whenever she made a mistake,
the Rein Guards would often call her stupid, useless and nuisance. Or even
better.
Burden.
She could still taste that
word on her tongue.
Higher ups looked down at her.
They said that people like her didn't have any future. But Ciara wanted to
prove them wrong.
The harder she trained
herself to become independent, the faster she developed new skills to rely on,
other than being called useless again. She had learned to grasp the moving
objects across her, locate the speaker, and expand her imagination beyond her
mind. The Specialists were impressed with her. After all, she was the first
person to gain a perfect score in the tests. They even thought she was the
Candidate. But when they took her blood test, results were still normal.
After so many years, things
were still the same. The Specialists continued to test the disabled people.
Technology had begun to spread around the country of Round, creating highly
destructive weapons that would easily destroy the other regions with one click of
a button. Nuclear-powered weapons.
Ciara thought she was
chosen-free for life.
But this was just the
beginning.
A start of a new journey.
Author's note:
Hi everyone!
It's been what? 5 months since Blind Tails has been taken down from Writer's Cafe?
Well I have good news for you all!
I'll be posting Writer's Cafe on my blog, which is still in-progress, so i'll be sure to post the details on the next page when it's ready.
You will notice that Blind Tails has improved a lot, and there will be a lot of changes in the chapters and everything.
The reason why I'm posting it again is because Blind Tails didn't got accepted by publishers, agents and stuff, so I'll be giving it a new home where everyone can read it for free.
Yes, it's sad news, but I still learned so many things from it.
To all my fans, once again, I thank you for your patience, generosity and honesty for reading and helping Blind Tails grow. So it's my turn to reward you.
As you might notice, Blind Candidate is edted, but not successfully error-free and you might find the opening chapters confusing because I have put a lot of information in it. The story structure has also changed, and I apologize if there are too many missing pieces, errors, and other stuff that you might find annoying and irritating.
But this is my final word.
I will not revise, edit or change Blind Candidate. The story will stay as it is, and please enjoy it as much as you can.
I'm sorry that I'm not a perfect proofreader, editor and such. I'm not a perfect being
